Northern development in full swing

The Government has spent over one million rupees on each family in
the Northern Province, under the Uthuru Wasanthaya development drive,
Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri said.
The Northern Task Force, appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa,
has allocated billions of rupees to implement various development
projects to boost the economic and living standards of the Northern
people, according to the Governor.
He pointed out that there are one and a half million people in the
Northern Province. The Government has spent millions of rupees on
livelihood improvement and infrastructure development projects and most
of them are nearing completion, he said.
De-mining is also nearing completion.
The Government has also allocated funds to improve the health and
education sectors in the province.
The Government is providing assistance in various forms to resettled
people to improve their living standards. There are people in the area
who earn more than Rs. 75,000 per month, the Governor said.
Various local and international NGOs are assisting the Government's
ongoing projects. The Government is monitoring their activities, he
said.
