Chinese company to build Moragahakanda main dam

A Chinese company has bagged the contract to build the main dam for the Moragahakanda reservoir in Sri Lanka.

The Sinohydro Corporation will build the $ 382 million Moragahakanda reservoir dam, Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

The Moragahakanda reservoir is expected to meet the long-term demand for domestic and industrial water needs in the North-Central, Northern and Eastern Provinces.

"We are grateful for the assistance. We hope to become a country that will not depend on foreign loans and fund our own development," Xinhua quoted de Silva as saying.

The reservoir will, among others, supply water to 82,000 hectares of farm land.
