India humble Australia by 153 runs
By A. C. De Silva
FLASHBACK: India beat Hughes' Australian team by 153 runs at Green
Park to take the lead in the series in the October 1979 Test series.

Shival Yadav - took 2 for 65 and fared better in the second
innings and captured 4 for 35 to push the Australians
towards defeat.
|

Kim Hughes - scored 50 in Australia’s first innings total of
304 runs.
|

Graham Yallop was the top scorer for the Aussies in the
first innings with 89 in the total of 304 and made 15 in
their total of 125 in the second innings. |
India's bowling heroes on the final day when the Test ended a quarter
of an hour after tea, were Kapil Dev and Shivlal Yadev who had four
wickets each as Australia was bundled out for 125 runs in the second
innings.
In the first innings, India made 271 and in the second innings they
made 311 runs. In the first innings, Australia made 304 runs. In
retrospect, the Test was quite absorbing for two reasons: There was no
rain, which was a relief, and the second reason was the pitch, a new
one, which contributed a lot to making batting a most difficult
exercise.
Aussies pacemen lift unpredictable

Sadanand Vishwanath - scored 44 and 52 and played well
within himself.
|

Kapil Dev - 2 for 78 and 4 for 30 in the first and second
innings. His second innings haul helped India to dismiss
Australia for 125 runs in the second innings. |
The Australian pacemen did get unpredictable lift from the pitch on
the opening day, it was indeed creditable that India reached 200 for 1
wicket. Gavaskar who did well by winning the toss for the first time in
the series, and Chauhan put on 114 runs for the first wicket.
Australia was without Hurst, who would have surely played but for a
recurrence of back trouble which had plagued him throughout his career.
Gavaskar did well to make 76 and seemed set for his century, but his
partner Chauhan was too slow in making runs. Vengsarkar who came in
number three tried to remedy matters by striking hard and intelligently.

Sunil Gavaskar - 76 in the Indian first innings score of 271 |
Rodney Hogg - the Aussie paceman had changed the complexion of the
game in the space of 14 deliveries taking three important wickets. Then
Border got rid of Kapil Dev in the final over of the first day. India
made 271 all out in the first innings, with Aussie G. Dymoch taking 5
for 99 and Hogg 4 for 66.
Australia at one point were 75 for 3 wickets and seemed to be
vulnerably placed but a fine fourth wicket partnership of 93 between
skipper Hughes (50) and left-hander Graham Yallop (89) took the pressure
away a bit.
The Australians just got past the Indians on the first innings,
making 304 runs to get a first innings lead of 40 runs. Ghavri had 3 for
65, Kapil Dev 2 for 78 and Yadav 2 for 65. Came India's second innings
and Chauhan - the opener made his second score of over fifty, getting 84
this time and tucked into it ten boundaries in just over six hours.
He and Visvanath (52) put on 113 for the third wicket and it was the
partnership which kept Australia at bay. But the stand which gave India
the upperhand was between Chauhan (84) and Kirmani (45) who put on 79
for the sixth wicket. India were finally out for 311 in their second
innings for which gave them a lead of 278 runs. So, Australia had to get
279 with 250 minutes and 20 mandatory overs available. By lunch, it was
clear that only one side could win the match and that was India.
Kapil Dev and Ghavri grabbed the initial three wickets while Hilditch
was bowled off his pads by Doshi to make the team 49 for 4 wickets, the
wickets falling due to poor strokes by the Australian batsmen. Australia
were finally out for 125 in their second innings with India's paceman
Kapil Dev taking 4 for 30 and Shivlal Yadav 4 for 35. This gave India
the win.
