‘Top security for President in UK’

Britain’s Scotland Yard and London Metropolitan Police provided the maximum possible protection to President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his recent visit to the UK to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga said at a meeting with media heads at the Presidential Secretariat last week.

He said the British authorities did their utmost best to provide the toughest security to a Head of State, including a bulletproof car for his use during his stay in London.

In fact, President Rajapaksa was the only Head of State or VVIP, other than the Queen, to arrive at the main celebration in a car as all other world leaders were taken to the venue in a luxury coach. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Chris Nonis said that his office discussed security arrangements for the President with various security institutions in UK, including the Scotland Yard and the London Metropolitan Police. He said the Security provided to the President was of the highest standard.
