Residents appeal for repair of road

Residents and travellers using the 5 Km Polgahawatta-Abalanda stretch of the Rakwana-Nawinna Road in the Sabaragamuwa Province are appealing to authorities to repair the road to make it motorable again.

They say around 250 families living along this stretch, including schoolchildren, have been adversely affected by the condition of this road which has not been repaired since 1973. It is also the only road that links the area to Rakwana, the nearest major town.

The single bus that used to ply on this section now terminates its journey at Polgahawatta, as the crew refuse to take it any further.

It has also affected truck operators collecting tea leaves from estates in the vicinity. Tea pluckers are now compelled to walk 3-4 Km to the nearest motorable stretch as truck drivers are reluctant to drive on the dilapidated road. The residents say the rainy weather had made the road even worse.

They have appealed to the Godakawela Pradeshiya Sabha, the Provincial Council and the Road Development Authority to repair this road.
