
Monitoring Minister of Education Mohan Lal Grero denied that there
was a collapse in the education sector but admitted that there were
shortcomings and that constructive criticism would be appreciated.
Speaking on university closure, Deputy Education Minister said
universities were closed to prevent unlawful activities within the
premises.

Q: The Opposition is up in arms that the education system has
collapsed. What do you have to say?
A: It is a fiction on the part of the media and some opposition
politicians. There is no collapse as such, but there are shortcomings
which have to be addressed.
Q: Do you mean to say that the present education system is devoid of
weaknesses?
A: There should be a proper guideline for the education system
through a detailed Act in Parliament. A comprehensive act incorporating
necessary guidelines is important. Only constructive criticism will help
identify these weaknesses.

Q: Why were Universities closed so suddenly?
A: Since the dons are still on strike undergraduates cannot continue
their studies. The Universities were closed to ensure that students will
not get involved in unlawful activities.
Q: How is that the medical faculties continue to function as usual.
A: Lecturers at Medical faculties did not resort to strike action.
Medical faculties are functioning as a result and medical students can
continue with their studies.

Q: The country’s education sector needs to be improved. What have you
got to say about the present situation?
A: At present the education sector is beset with problems. Specially
the GCE Advanced Level examination and university admission results and
also the academics’ strike.
Q: What will you propose to overcome this situation?
A: I am going to move a private member’s Bill in Parliament
incorporating solutions to the education sector soon. |
