The suspect wanted by the Wellawatte police in connection with the
alleged killing of his father, mother and sister was arrested at
Kadawatha while travelling in a passenger bus bound for Kurunegala on
Friday around 10.a.m, when a fellow passenger who noticed him in the
back seat of the bus informed the Wellawatte police, Police Media
Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.
The suspect had shaven his head to disguise himself and police found
some drugs in his possession which they believe were used as the poison
given to his parents and his sister.
Acting on a tip off, Inspector Nagahawatte of the Wellawatte police
Crime unit and his team of officers gave chase and intercepted the bus
with the help of officers of the Kadawatha police. The suspect on
interrogation admitted that he had given yoghurt laced with some drugs
to his parents and his sister to rob their gold jewellery.
He had not been in good terms with his father since he had refused to
give him some money to settle a debt as his father had received his EPF
and ETF money.
According to the police he had borrowed large sums of money from
various businessmen at Kotahena and was in debt to the tune of Rs. 7
million.
Soon after his parents and sister had been drugged he had gone to his
parental home at Kotagala and ransacked the almirahs and stolen some
valuables. On his return when he visited his flat he found his parents
and sister dead. Thereafter, he had stolen the gold jewellery and kept
several air fresheners and moth balls to drown the smell of the rotting
bodies.
