GOLF: The American Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (AMCHAM) along
with the NDB Bank and Airtel will launch on a worthwhile project in
conducting a Golf Tournament on August 25 with the collaboration of the
Royal Colombo Golf Club to raise funds for the needy people in the
vicinity of the RCGC .
This tournament is exclusively a charitable event and a part of the
proceeds of the tournament will be utilised for the needs of the
underprivileged of the society. During the past three years (AMCHAM)
along with the RCGC and NDB have provided the needy people in the area
with school bags, school books, uniform materials, scholarships for
exceptionally talented students who have performed well at exams to meet
their future educational expenses.
A part of the revenue from the tournament will also go to the welfare
of the caddies/course workers staff of the RCGC.
Around 250 amateur golfers, local and expatriates are expected to
take part in this popular tournament. The National Development Bank
(NDB) are the platinum sponsors while Airtel join hands as Gold
sponsors.
In the last two tournaments about 111 and 123 children respectively
benefited immensely from this annual tournament. In a press briefing held
with regard to the tournament at the RCGC, the president of (AMCHAM) Sri
Lanka, Vijaya Ratnayake said that the event is a multi-faceted one
because charity, networking, fellowship and sports are all combined in
one event.
Golf is being played from early hours in the morning to dusk then
fellowship and in the evening there will be the award ceremony.
For the past ten years, AMCHAM with the support of the sponsors have
always been contributing to the Jaipur Limb Foundation, Castle Street
Maternity Hospital and the Cancer Hospital and to registered Orphanages.
However, as a result of the partnership between RCGC and AMCHAM for the
past two years we have concentrated more on the educational needs of the
underprivileged children of the caddie staff and those who live in the
vicinity.
This year too, we will continue to do the same because we all get the
personal satisfaction of helping the community that serve us and our
deserving neighbours in the true sense of the saying 'charity begins at
home'. he said.
Priath Fernando, Captain of the RCGC, Primal Wijayanayake, Chairman,
Organising Committee, Raj Aboobucker Vice President, SME and Retail
Banking, NDB. Suren de Chikera, Head of Brand Marketing and
Communication also spoke.
