AAC on road safety issues

The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), one of the
world's largest motoring body, held its Region 2 Roundtable and the
Overseas Safe Driving Fora in Singapore recently.
The Automobile Association of Ceylon, President Dhammika Attygalle
was present.
The Region 2 Roundtable Forum discussed matters relating to the clubs
in the Asia Pacific region. Representatives of these clubs participated
in this forum. Several issues relating to club matters, and
presentations by individual club Presidents on Road Safety initiatives
undertaken by each country was discussed.
Dhammika Attygalle made a presentation on the activities undertaken
by the AAC to address road safety issues in Sri Lanka and stressed the
need to reduce fatalities. He called upon the FIA to support these
efforts by funding regional training.
The forum concluded with the drawing up of a Region 2 Decade of
Action for road safety strategic plan.
The AAC in the recent past got the seatbelt rule law implemented in
the country, following the visit of President FIA Jean Todt, and UN
Global Ambassador for Road Safety Michelle Yeoh. The AAC conducts
seminars: for schoolchildren to educate them on traffic safety; for
members on safe driving on the Southern Expressway, and Road Safety
Management Education.
