Art meets photography at Radiance
by Lakmal Welabada
Radiance, an exhibition of paintings will be held at the Lionel Wendt
on October 13 and 14 from 9.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Have you ever compared the
difference between a painting and a picturesque photograph? A still
photograph we snatch through a camera lens with a mere click would go
through a series of processes in a dark room before it could be hung on
the wall.

One of her creations |
A painting, on the other hand comes out of painter's feelings about
something and how he gasps things through his or her five senses. A
painting done under a good light, and colour would vary according to the
artist's imaginations, likes and dislikes.
However, a photograph and a painting are two things that move on
parallel tracks, which rarely meet each other. 'Radiance', an exhibition
where art meets photography provides an exceptional and exquisite
experience for art lovers. Erandathi Salgado who puts these two art
media together has this to say.
"I first take photographs of a landscape, wildlife, portrait or
whatever is eye catching. I then draw and do the painting on the canvas
with a relevant medium - oils, watercolours, pastel or charcoal.
It's similar to looking at a landscape and drawing. But the
difference is that an artist could grasp the scenery better and go into
intricate details. Hence the final piece of art work would be the
best"....
Erandathi, who has gained fame for her paintings and needlecraft held
art exhibitions in 1995, 1996 and 1999 in Sri Lanka, and then in Hawai
in 2004. 'Radiance' is a turning point in her life as she introduces
herself as a freelance photographer.
Erandathi is the wife of former Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air
Vice Marshall Laksen Salgado and the mother of two.
"I started with hand embroidery and later with the professional
guidance of Mrs. Lathifa Ismail. I moved on to painting. And now finally
I am involved in photography', she said.
'Radiance' which comes with colour and black and white promises to
provide a novel experience for art enthusiasts.
