Committee to discuss more powers to NPC
by Manjula FERNANDO
A committee to look into the possibility of giving wider powers to
the National Police Commission (NPC) is to be appointed on the directive
of President Mahinda Rajapaksa this week.
NPC Chairman Senaka Walgampaya PC said representatives from the
Attorney-General’s Department, Defence Ministry, Presidential
Secretariat, Treasury, Public Services Commission and the IGP’s office
will make deliberations and finalise a report to the President within a
month.
They will evaluate the situation and discuss ways to strengthen its
investigative arm, with wider access to police stations, police log
registries and call-up reports and summon police officers for inquiry.
