Dons to give up TU action?

The membership of the Federation of University Teachers' Association (FUTA) will take a decision whether to continue or suspend their trade union action only after the discussion to be held with Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera tomorrow, FUTA President Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri told the Sunday Observer last night.

Dr. Nirmal made these remarks after the discussion the representatives of FUTA had with Senior Presidential Advisor and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa yesterday.

He said Minister Rajapaksa, during the discussion, made a commitment for the implementation of the decisions taken at the earlier discussions they had with the Government and also promised to make arrangements for them to have a discussion with Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera tomorrow to settle the salary issue.

“Based on the outcome of the discussion the membership will decide on the trade union action”, he said.

A spokesman for Senior Presidential Advisor and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said the Minister has given the freedom to the FUTA to make a statement on the outcome of the discussion adding that they expect the FUTA will end their months long trade union action tomorrow.
