Thomian rowers regain Fernando Trophy

S. Thomas’ College rowers showed their mastery in rowing by winning the Regatta and the Boat Race at the 39th annual Royal-Thomian Regatta on Saturday on the Beira Lake, Colombo, racking up a team total of 38 points to cruise comfortably ahead of Royalists, who had 14 points. Before commencing the prestigious Boat Race, the points tally saw Mt. Lavinia rowers lead by 26 to 14. Thus the Thomians regained the T.N. Fernando Trophy after three years.

It marked the 19th time in the 39-year-history of the event that the Thomians have won the Regatta while Rayalists having won it on 15 occasions. Reid Avenue oarsmen were unable to defend their title, having won the Regatta by the biggest margin of 48-4 last year.

It was the Thomian crew of Anuradha Nadaraja, Ming-Hua-Change, Ramith Nanayakkara, captain Sajin de Livera and Kemil Peter, competing in the outside course led the way yesterday.

The crew teamed up to win the much waited Boat Race in three minutes and four seconds over the 1000-metre course, comfortably ahead of the Royal rowers, who clocked 3.06.

Earlier, Sandesh Bartlett of S. Thomas’ College took the Senior Sculls Trophy, winning the A Scull in 3.43sec in the day’s first event, which started at 12.30pm. Reid Avenue school’s sixteen-year-old Bilal Hassen rowed on his way to capture the B Scull event in three minutes and 52 seconds and won the Ajith Goonawardena Trophy.

In the B Four, S. Thomas’ College crew was enjoying a two-length lead mid-way on the fascinating Beira Lake and they went on to maintain it until reaching the winning line in 3.13 sec.

The Thomians won the B Four after a lapse of eight years in their annual Regatta.
