Holy Cross stun Antonians
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Cor.
Holy Cross College, Kalutara surprised St. Anthony's College, Kandy
by gaining a slender first innings lead of three runs in their
inter-school cricket match concluded at the Eagles Nest at Katugastota
yesterday.
If not for the interruptions by rain on both days this match could
have provided an interesting finish. On the first day only 75 minutes of
play was possible and Holy Cross College made 54 for 4.
On the second day they were dismissed for 111 after batting for a
further 36 overs. C. Kamesh top scoring with 31 and E. Asanga coming
late made 26 not out.
Medium pacer Charles Praveen took 3 for 33 while the two spinners
Sachin Bulathsinhala (3 for 22) and Nimesha Gunasinghe (3 for 35) were
also successful.
The Anthonians chasing this modest total perhaps under estimated
their opponents bowling and made a big hash of it and put themselves in
trouble and were at one stage 84 for 8 and were in danger of being
dismissed for a two figure total before the tail enders took them closer
to their opponents total but failed by 3 runs. Medium pacer S. Fernando
took 4 for 35.
Batting a second time Holy Cross made 70 for 4 in just 7.4 overs and
opener L. Mendis scored 56 not out in just 20 balls with the aid of 5
sixes and 4 fours displaying some brute hitting. Nimesha Gunasinghe took
2 for 1.
Holy Cross College: 111 all out in 56.3 overs (C. Kamesh 31, A.K.
Sasanga 13, E. Ashanga 26 not out, Charles Praveen 3 for 33, Nimesha
Gunasinghe 3 for 35, Sachin Bulathsinhala 3 for 22) and 70 for 4 in 7.4
overs (L. Mendis 56 not out, Nimesha Gunasinghe 2 for 1, Kavindu
Maduranga 2 for 15).
St. Anthony's College: 108 all out in 29.4 overs (Sachin
