SLT completes CCTV surveillance system
Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) successfully connected the country's largest
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system through its
advanced fibre optic based Metro Ethernet Network (MEN) infrastructure,
enabling the Police Department to carry out real-time video monitoring,
control cameras remotely, record, store and playback video footage.

"The implementation of ICT solutions in road traffic handling,
monitoring and management, will ensure that roads will be a safer place
for all citizens. Plans are under way to commence research and
development to introduce dynamic services related to road safety and
improve traffic monitoring in the near future," a spokesman for the
company said.
The Sri Lanka police video surveillance network was implemented with
107 cameras connected through SLT's advanced communication
infrastructure, Metro Ethernet Network (MEN). The company's Internet
Protocol based (IP/MPLS) communication backbone network with fibre ring
architecture was upgraded to one Gbps Ethernet to achieve high speed
data and video transfer and to improve reliability and security.
"Through this solution, the Police CCTV Division, which receives live
video surveillance images, will help manage traffic, maintain public
security and safety, aid in crime detection and prevention and help to
make Colombo and suburbs a safe and secure place," he said.
SLT provided connectivity to 30 selected street junctions in Colombo
and suburbs.
These junctions have now been installed with multiple surveillance
cameras mounted on one or more camera posts. SLT has already linked
these to Police Headquarters.
"The 107 cameras connected through the optical fibre network have the
required bandwidth for video surveillance. The system records and stores
images which can even be used as evidence in a court of law," the
spokesman said. |
