Garbage in Hendala, a health hazard
Residents of Hendala complain that garbage in the area lies for weeks
without being collected by the Pradeshiya Sabha. Residents complain of
the bad odour along many lanes and by-roads from the garbage piles.
They say the garbage lies there for days and weeks and is pulled and
strewn all over by dogs and crows which cause the spread of diseases.
Garbage bags also accumulate rain water, helping the spread of
mosquitoes resulting in a dengue threat as well.
When contacted, officials of the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha said they
do not have a proper place to dump garbage. The drains in the area have
not been cleaned for several months and many are clogged with bags and
heaps of sand, causing water to overflow even during a slight drizzle.
All complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
Residents hope that speedy action would be taken to clean up the area
without allowing it to escalate, causing more harm to the environment
and public health. |
