Rs.1m worth mobile phones, tablet PCs seized

A person who tried to smuggle in mobile phones and tablet PCs worth
over Rs.1 million in someone else's baggages was seized by the Customs
at the Bandaranaike International Airport last morning.
Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini told Sunday Observer that the suspect
had arrived from Dubai and was searched on suspicion whilst trying to go
through the green channel.
The Customs found 785 mobile phones and 34 tablet PCs well hidden in
two bags in his possession. However when checked the suspect's name and
the name tags on his baggage had not matched.
It was later revealed that the bags were brought in by another person
who had come in the same flight and had asked him to take them out of
the airport. The items were valued at Rs. 1,060,000 were forfeited and a
penalty of Rs.45,000 was imposed on the suspect.
Deputy Director of Customs A.K.N. Wickremasingha and his team are
conducting inquiries. |
