Driving licences -Automated system soon
by Kurulu Kariyakarawana
The Department of Motor Traffic will introduce a new automated system
to issue driving licences to check corruption and enhance efficiency.
This is a sequel to the continuous allegations being levelled against
the department that examiners solicit bribes to pass licence applicants
at the practical test.
Commissioner General Department of Motor Traffic S H Harishchandra
told the Sunday Observer that this was a long-felt need and an important
move to make the department a corruption free office.
Preliminary discussions are now being conducted with the relevant
authorities to implement this system as soon as possible, he said.
When the new system is introduced the examiners will only test the
applicants of the trial runs and the related paperwork will be handled
by a separate staff.
Many applicants have complained that they pay a Rs. 1,000 bribe to
the examiners through brokers to pass the practical test.
