India lose 1st Test-four to follow

The bright sunlight of a lifetime was somewhat mercilessly illuminated the Indian cricket tour of England in 1959, but it lacked in both enterprise and fighting quality, but no one was truly surprised when they set up the unenviable record of being the first side to lose all five Tests of a rubber in England.

Pankaj Roy gave strength to the Indian batting with knocks of 54 and 49 in the first and second innings against England.

Peter May made the top score of 106 and helped England to make 422 in the Test against India at Nottingham.

The match was played at Nottingham on June 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th.

The Indian team surprised many spectators when they played like sixteen lonely individuals and set up the unenviable record of being the first side to lose all five Tests of a rubber in England.

The cricket board in India must have been as dismayed by the tour as English cricket followers: but, outwardly at least, the touring players bore their defeat somewhat bravely and gave no public hint of any dissension - if, indeed any existed among them.

The side's troubles began even before it was picked. In the 1958-59 'home' series against the West Indies, India had four different captains in five Tests - and three of those four did not make the tour to England.

Godfrey Evans – the England wicket-keeper made 73 and helped England to pile on the runs.

Ghulam Ahmed, who would have been the senior member of the side, withdraw a few days after his selection.

The touring captaincy was given to D.K. Gaekwad, who had played in only one Test against the West Indies, and that as a reserve brought in when Kripal Singh had to withdraw because of injury.

Peter May was the England captain for the 23rd time in 33 Tests as captain and he led the team from the front making a century - 106 and pushed the batsmen along to make 422 in their first innings. Besides May, the others to make useful scores were: Ken Barrington 56, M. Horton 58, Godfrey Evans 73.

M.J. Horton made 58 runs and gave much strength to the England batting.

Ken Barrington of England made 56 and added ‘beef’ to the middle order batting.

Peter May let the England innings run its course on the second day and then India gave a solid display, scoring 116 runs off 65.1 overs in 220 minutes before a thunderstorm cut short play.

India were all out for 206 runs in the first innings with opening batsman P. Roy making 54 in 183 minutes batting. India were forced to follow-on.

England's Fred Trueman took 4 for 45, while Statham had 2 for 46 and Moss 2 for 33.

Forced to follow-on, India made 157 in their second turn with opening batsman Roy making 49 and V.L. Manjrekar 44. So, England won the Test by an innings and 59 runs.

It was Statham who was in the forefront of the bowling with a haul of five wickets for 31 runs, while Trueman had 2 for 44 and Greenheigh 2 for 48.
