Puttalam turning into model district
by Naalir Jamaldeen
The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant provides 300 MW of electricity to
the national grid. Another 300 MW will be added to the national grid
soon, Puttalam District Secretary M. Kinsley Fernando said.
He was addressing a workshop organised by the Department of
Government Information under the theme "Role of provincial journalists
for district development" at the Secretariat auditorium. He said the
Puttalam district is famous for the production of various vegetables and
fruits and cultivation of red onions.
Puttalam is gradually turning into a model district. The fishermen in
the district contribute 16 percent to national fish production. Wind
power generation is another special feature of the district. Electricity
generation successfully takes place along the lagoon and coastal belt of
the district, Fernando said.
The Puttalam district contributes considerably to national
development.
