The opening ceremony of the Mount Lavinia Coastguard Lifesaving Post
took place at the Mount Lavinia beach with the participation of
Coastguard Director General, Rear Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne on
Thursday.
Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa attended the function as guest of
honour and declared open the Lifesaving Post constructed by Coastguard
personnel.
The newly constructed Lifesaving Post will remain as an important
safety feature available on the beach for both local and foreign
tourists. The necessity for a dedicated Lifesaving Post on the Mt.
Lavinia beach was identified by the Coastguard considering the necessity
to make the popular tourist beach, a safe and secure place.
The Lifesaving Post will have a direct impact on the ever growing
tourism industry in the Mt. Lavinia area with the availability of
professional lifeguards of the Sri Lanka Coastguard. Similar Lifesaving
Posts were constructed at Wellawatta, Panadura, Balapitiya and Mirissa
recently.
Officials from the Sri Lanka Lifesaving Association and the Sri Lanka
Coastguard, and hotel owners in the area attended the function.
At the end of the event, Coastguard lifeguards conducted a lifesaving
demonstration.
