Wallala A. Ratnayake, Menikhinna - boys and girls champions

Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College, Menikhinna called the shots at the annual Central Province Schools Track and Field Championship by becoming overall champions for boys as well as girls in the athletic championship organised by the Department of Education of the Central Province and concluded at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy on Friday.

Over 400 schools and 3,000 athletes from the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya participated in the biggest meet of the Central which was well organised under the guidance of Director of Schools Sports of the Central Province Athula Jayawardena.

The Governor of the Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa was the Chief Guest and he distributed the main awards with Provincial Director (CP) Tilak Ekanayake, Commander T. Amarakoon, Assistant Director H. Nawaratne and Principal of Wallala Central College Dhammika Herath.

Championship for girls

Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College completely dominated the girls championship by aggregating 414 points with a clear 203 point lead over the runners up Ambegamuwa Central College from the Hatton Education Zone who had 211 points to their credit. It is noteworthy to mention that the first and second places here went to two rural schools.

What happened to elite girls schools from Kandy - Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy finished third with 124 points and Kandy Girls High ended up in the fourth position with 94 points.

The fifth and sixth places went to Galewela Central College 54 points and Pushpadana Maha Vidyalaya, Ambatenna with 50 points.

It must be mentioned that of the first six positions, four went to rural schools where fitness and energy played a major role.

B.M.S.K. Kumari - beat among girls

B.M.S.K. Kumari of Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College, Menikhinna Under-21 age group category in the 400 metres sprint with a timing of 59.8 seconds.

Boys Championships

Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College completed the double when they totalled 312 points to end up as champions for championship for boys.

Ending up as runners up in this segment was Trinity College Kandy with 199 points, Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College underlined their supremacy here by registering a clear lead of 113 points which indicates their dominance in this segment. St. Sylvesters College ended up as second runner up with 153 points and Sri Sumangala College in fourth place with 70 points. The fifth and sixth places went to St. Anthony's College, Kandy 59 points and Poramadulla National School, Hanguraketha 47 points.The Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College were coached by Susantha Fernando who has produced top grade athletes over the years winning many national championships.

Best athlete Boys: H.M.G.M. Kulaherath of Pujapitiya National School for covering a distance of 14.35 metres in the Under-19 triple jump.
