More rain in Central, Sabaragamuwa provinces

Rainy weather is expected to continue in the Central and Sabaragamuwa areas with a decrease in all other areas today, Met Department duty officer, Ms Pabudini Karunakala told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Meanwhile, heavy rains experienced in the past few days has increased water in the catchment areas at Mausekela and Castleraegh to spill level. Informed sources said that the water level was 9-10 feet below spill level.

The Disaster Management Centre has also warned residents in Avisawella and Ruwanwella and other areas in the vicinity to be vigilant since the water level in the Kelaniya river was rapidly rising.

Landslides threats in the Central Province including Kandy has also prompted authorities to caution those living in hilly areas prone to landslides.

A number of families are currently being housed in temporary shelters due to floods.
