Senior cricket writer
and Sunday Observer columnist Dr. Elmo Rodrigopulle with
over 50 years of sports writing particularly cricket for the
Times Group and Lake House Group, and in helping the
progress and development of the game, was honoured and
felicitated at the Dialog/Sri Lanka Cricket Awards ceremony
held at Waters Edge, Battaramulla on Tuesday. Dr.
Rodrigopulle, consultant to the Daily News Sports Editor,
played and captained his school St. Bendict’s College,
Kotahena. His crowning moment was when he captured a
hat-trick against St. Peter’s College. He later played for
Tamil Union, BRC, Colts and Saracens. He was the first to
score a century when limited over cricket for the Browns
Trophy was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1972. He achieved this
feat for Saracens against his old club Tamil Union.
Rodrigopulle also has centuries in Sara Trophy and Donovan
Andree Trophy to his credit. He also played for the Board
President’s XI against Hong Kong in 1972 under the captaincy
of Michael Tissera. He was an all-rounder – right-hand
batsman and leg-spin googly bowler. |
