Sarfraz 11 for 125 grabs victory over Australia by 71 runs!
by A.C. de Silva
FLASHBACK: This was a match to remember - the first Test between
Australia and Pakistan at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, the
biggest stadium in Australia on March 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 in 1979 and
the result was something extraordinary - Pakistan went on to win by 71
runs and it was a real upset.
At tea on the fifth day, Australia was sitting on top, with
left-hander Border had tucked a century under his belt and Kim Hughes
was going great guns. Pakistan captain Mushtaq Mohammad in fact had
thrown in the towel.
However, there was one Pakistani player Sarfraz Nawaz the second
speedster had other ideas as far as Pakistan was concerned.
Australia was more or less torpedoed by the Pakistan's. The home team
Australia, needing just 98 runs with seven wickets in hand, went
crashing in the face of a one-in-a-lifetime spell from Sarfraz Nawaz
that had Australia losing wickets so quickly. Sarfraz Nawaz has figures
of 9 for 86 in 35.4 overs with 7 maiden that pushed Pakistan to the
victory post.As Pakistan skipper Mushtaq Mohammad said, "Sarfraz's
sensational spell was an Himalayan performance." His previous best was 6
for 89 against the West Indies at Lahore. Sarfraz Nawaz also joined
India's Jasu Patel and England's Jim Laker in the exclusive club of
those who have taken nine wickets in an innings. In batting for the
Pakistanis, going at the top for the Pakistanis was Majid Khan who made
108 who batted well and there was also Zaheer Abbas - a fine
stroke-maker capable of taking charge of any attack and he made 59. The
whole Pakistan team batted well.
It was the Pakistan bowling that was worrying, but the Pakistan
bowlers on this occasion bowled tightly in the second innings after the
early batting of Allan Border who made 105 and Andrew Hilditch (62) who
put on 60 runs for the second wicket in the second wicket and later on
Kim Hughes (84) batted well, but the middle order collapsed - 305 for 4
wickets to 310 all out.
