Sampur power project to be completed by 2017
Sri Lanka and India will ink the much awaited 500 MW coal power
project in Sampur in the Trincomalee district, this week, Power and
Energy Ministry sources said.
The power plant will be operated by Trincomalee Power Corporation, a
joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and India's National
Thermal Power Corporation. The discussion on this project was started in
2005 during President Mahinda Rajapaksa's official visit to India. The
project was delayed due to long discussions over technical parameters
and power purchase agreement. Construction work will be launched within
one year of signing the agreements and will be completed by 2017.
Two, 250 MW coal power generators will be installed and a
transmission line will be drawn from Sampur to Veyangoda to connect the
power supply to the national grid.
The project will significantly enhance the generation capacity of the
CEB and enable it to reduce average generation cost of a unit.
