Ushan Madusanka hits 242 for Gamini Dissanaike Model School vs
Trinity ‘C’
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen – Kandy Sports Corr.
Twelve-year-old right-hand batsman Ushan Madusanka cracked a fine 242
for Gamini Dissanaike Model School, Hasalaka to guide his team to a
massive 251 run first innings win over Trinity College ‘C’ in their
schools under 13 Division three cricket tournament match played at
Hasalaka during the week.
Ushan Madusanka’s run thirst saw him hitting no less than 16 sixes
and 26 fours and faced 155 balls. This meant 200 of his runs came in
boundaries and had a strike rate of over 160.
This may be only a Division three cricket tournament match and for a
12-year-old cricketer from grade 7 class to score a double hundred
against an elite school from the city of Kandy is most remarkable.
For the record Hasalaka is about 90 kilometres from Kandy and lies
between Mahiyangana and the elephant sanctuary of Wasgamuwa. They have
hardly any facility to play cricket and have little exposure to the
game. But this little boy had shown exceptional skills by staying at the
wicket and going for the bowling without throwing away his wicket.
The ground conditions were same for both teams and therefore there
could be no excuse. Not satisfied in scoring a double ton against the
might of Trinity, he opened the attack and took 4 for 12 to rout the
Trinity ‘C’ team for 73 thus spearheading the Hasalaka school to a
historic win by a huge margin.Gamini Dissanaike Model School,
