Dessford Estate marks Environment Day

The schoolchildren with the plants

Dessford Estate in Talawakele launched a tree planting program on World Environment Day with two schools, Dessford Tamil MV and Abbotsford TV.

The company distributed plants with timber value and fruits plants to the children and each child who planted a tree was entrusted to look after it until it grows and the process will be monitored to ensure the sustainability of the program.

The chief guest was the Nuwara Eliya Zonal Director of Education.

Dessford estate is managed by Talawakele Plantation Company PLC and the program was organised by Dessford Regional General Manager Nishantha Abeysinghe.

Senior Assistant Managers W.K.R.D. de Silva, K.D. Manohar, staff and schoolchildren were present. Manohar said that since the tea sector is highly sensitive to changes in the environment the sector has a responsibility to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change.

Planting trees and ensuring that they grow is important. This year World Environment Day focused on rising sea levels and its impact on small island states which is directly relevant to Sri Lanka, he said.
