FLASHBACK: The Sri Lankans are at Lord's right now. They were there
in 2002 between May 16 and 20 and drew with England. The Lankans took
the field with a lot of confidence when they took the field having won
nine straight Tests at Lord's. The English Commentators were some what
vary about banking on the Sri Lankans.
There was no Muttiah Muralitharan who was being treated for a
dislocated shoulder in Melbourne after a fall in Sharjah.
England skipper Nazar Hussain who lost the toss for the 19th time in
22 matches.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat and lost two early wickets -
Sanath Jayasuriya was run out 18 when he opened the innings with
Atapattu, the score being 38, then Sangakkara - the number 3 bat then
edged Hogg and to slip and Sri Lanka were 55 for 2 wickets and a bat
patch.
However, then came the revival as four hours later the score was 261
for 3 and it was England were reeling.
Atapattu (185) and Mahela Jayawardene (107) came to gather in a spot
of revival and after nearby four hours later the Sri Lankan were sitting
pretty 261 for 3 and it was England who were reeling.
Atapattu and Jayawardene batted superbly, displaying style and
finesse in a stand by 206. Atapattu had already shown his skills before
a Lord's audience, where as Jayawardene was a revelation. At the end of
the first day, Sri Lanka was 314 for 3 wickets and Dunkan Fletcher had
unkind words for all his bowlers, bar Flintoff. Caddick, and England,
had failed.

Russell Arnold made 50 to push the Sri Lanka total up. |
Came day 2 and Sri Lanka went forward and they piled on 555 for 8
wickets and closed their innings. There was Aravinda de Silva with 88
and Russel Arnold with 50 who gave the necessary punch so that the
batting went as smoothly away.
Cork was the most successful England bowler with 3 for 93, while
Haggard (2 for 160) and Flintoff (2 for 101) gave him some support. The
batsmen took advantage of an easy paced wicket. Hussain had 11
boundaries in his 57, and there was no rational explanation for what
happened after their stand of 106 was broken.
Sri Lanka's four-man seam attack - with only one right-hander (Buddhika
Fernando) among them came somewhat to push forward Sri Lanka's bowling
force after Muralitharan had to pull out because of injury.
England were all out for 275 with Fernando 93 for 83) and Perera (3
for 48) having to do the bulk of the bowling due o the absence of
Muralitharan.
But it was a completely different England side in the second innings.
There was M.P. Vaughan - the opener with 115, Butcher who made 105 to
pile on the runs before being run out, but he suppressed his usual game
and took 6 1/2 hours for his knock and there were two other useful
knocks by G.P. Thorpe (65) and Nasser Hussain 68 who contributed useful
runs.
So, England's batting was saved and they made 529 for 5 wickets
declared in their follow on to save the match.
Sri Lanka made 42 for 1 wicket in their second innings and the match
was drawn.
