Life back to normal in riot-hit areas

Law enforcement authorities have restored peace and normalcy in the riot-hit areas of Aluthgama, Beruwala and Matugama with 58 suspects being taken in for questioning, the police said.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said life has returned to normal with shops and commercial establishments functioning as usual.

Additional police contingents backed by the Police Special Task Force personnel are patrolling the streets. Of those arrested 39 were remanded.

Forty-eight, people sustained injuries including seven policemen and one STF cadre during the clashes. Of the three deaths, two were reported from Aluthgama and the other from Matugama.

Police have received 138 complaints so far relating to property damage.
