Matthew and Machiko set up 200m freestyle records



Matthew Abeysinghe of Asian International School competes in his record breaking 200m freestlye event yesterday.

Sri Lanka's freestyle record holders Matthew Abeysinghe and Machiko Raheem set up two new records in 200m freestyle events on the third day of the 41st Milo Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Swimming Championship worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Matthew Abeysinghe, the Asian International School student clocked 1:55.44 with a huge lead over the second placed swimmer, erasing the previous record of 2:02.81 set by Shehan de Silva of Trinity College last year.

Asian International School's Machiko Raheem finished the 200m freestyle event in 2:14.48 eclipsing the previous record of 2:26.92 set by Hansani Weeratunga of Mahamaya College Kandy in 2008.

However, Matthew Abeysinghe, the national record holder of this event could not improve on his best time of 1:52.74. It was the same with Machiko Raheem, who too could not improve on her best time of 2:08.96.

It was also both these swimmers third record in the meet so far. The relay events are scheduled for today (Sunday).

Under-17 50m Backstroke: Imesh Chathuranga 28.63 (DSSC), 2 Ashitha Halambarachchige 31.58 (SJC), 3 Shamod Athlathmudali 32.12 (WC)

Under-15 Butterfly: 1 Ishara Abeyratne 2:27.17 (RC), 2 Kavin Weerasinghe 2:30.90 (CIS), 3 Dehan Fernando 2:33.15 (SPC).

Girls

Under-19 200m Freestyle: 1 Machiko Raheem 2:14.48 (AIS), 2 Ayeshika Jayawardena 2:52.12 (MCK), 3 Romana Fernando 2:56.32 (HFC).

Under-19 200m Butterfly: 1 Ridmi Rankothge 2:53.94 (MUE), 2 Malaika Dole 3:18.65 (LC), 3 Devmini Kularatne 3:23.66 (MCK).

Under-17 200m Butterfly: 1 Hansi Dananjana Perera 2:40.37 (HCN), 2 Hiruni Sanjana Perera 2:47.15 (HCN), 3 Nimashi de Silva 2:56.65 (LC)

Under-17 400m Freestyle: 1 Chamodi Fonseka 5:05.30 (LISW), 2 Dilekha Goonewardene 5:16.35 (LC), 3 Thilini Tennakoon 5:33.45 (MCK).

Under-17 200m Freestyle: 1 Himani Vithanage 2:22.13 (MUE), 2 Yenushka Senanayake 2:30.06 (VV), 3 Thilini Tennakoon 2:35.46 (MCK).
