India win by five wickets at Lord's

FLASHBACK: Oh to win at Lord's! This has become the long felt dream of almost all cricket captains the world war. Sri Lanka's neighbours-India achieved their long felt dream when they beat England under skipper Kapil Dev in his 21st Test as Indian skipper in the match played at Lord's between June 5 and 10 in 1986.

Kapil Dev – took 4 for 52 in the 2nd innings of England who were all out for 180. In the first innings he took 1 for 67 in England’s 294.

Graham Dilley (England) – took 4/146 and 2 for 28 against India in the Test at Lord’s in June 1886.

Dilip Vengsarkar – scored 126 not out the top score of the match against England. He made 33 out of 136/5 in the second innings.

Indeed the clash against England at Lord's was something special and the preparations for the match then would have been quite ruined by the number of days lost because of the rain. At that time what saved the Indian party was the fact that so many of the players were seasoned campaigners who had been in England. The manager then Raj Singh was loved by English people wherever he went and the win would surely have been a just reward for those concerned with the management of Indian cricket then.

Indian skipper Kapil Dev may well have wanted to shield his batsmen against the England bowlers spearheaded by Dilley. The England team had gooch - a very capable batsman and the Indian bowlers had a lot to do to keep him under control.

The Indian bowlers spearheaded by Kapil Dev also had Chetan Sharma

who struck it rich and gave the English batsmen ample problems to worry when they batted first and removed gower and getting for 18 and getting without scoring to put India in the game and when Lanka's technique let him down again, this time by playing forward on too stiff a left knee, England's innings was on the floor. So, England had a real tough job on their hands.

Pringle (63) and Gooch came together and opening bat Gooch (114) came forward with some fine strates but appeared to be slightly tired and was out in the last ball of the first day and Pringle could not take charge against accurate bowling on the second day morning. So, England who put on 66 for the opening partnership between Gooch and T. Robinson (35), apart from Pringle could not take charge of the situation.

A total of under 300 runs was not enough for England who were all out for 294.

Chetan Sharma (5 for 64) and Roger Binny (3 for 55) had the England batsman in check.

Determined cricket by Indians

Derek Pringle – made 63 in England’s first innings total of 294. In the 23rd innings, he made six runs out of 180.

Graham Gooch – made the top score of 114 for England in the first innings total of 294 against India at in the Test at Lord’s in June 1986.

Came India's turn and there was some movement, but the Indian batsmen put their heads down and played some determined cricket on the second day. Indian support opener K. Srikkanth (20) was the only wicket to fall at 31, while Sunil Gavaskar (34) and M. Amarnath (69) got the scoring going on the third day with a second-wicket stand of 59 runs.

The best batting came from Dilip Vengsarkar (126 not out). He batted really well. Vengsarkar's strokes were all from the book and made his runs methodically. India made 341 runs in their first innings.

Of the English bowlers, Dilley (4 for 146) and Pringle (3 for 58) shared the wickets between them.

Came England's turn for the second innings and they were somewhat bundled out for 180 with getting making the highest with 40, A. Lamb 39.

India's Kapil Dev (4 for 52) and Marindar Singh (3 for 9 off 20.1 overs with 12 maidens) were the pick of the bowlers.

India - only 134 needed for win

Came India second turn to bat and they had only 134 runs to make for a some what glorious win.

India's captain Kapil Dev saw this as a real gift, but he went about making the runs in a methodical manner England's Dilley bowled well and removed K. Srikkanth - the opener No. 3 batsman M.B. Amarnath for nought and 8 respectively. Two down for 31 runs. There were some anxious moments and it was left for Kapil Dev (not out 23) and Ravi Shastri (20 not out) to see that no further damage was done and saw the victory post reached at 136 for 5 wickets.

In a parting message, Indian skipper Kapil Dev said: "In cricket you cannot lose all the time nor win all the time either."
