China to fund 500-bed kidney hospital

China has pledged to construct a 500 bed, fully-equipped kidney hospital in Polonnaruwa, in addition to providing financial assistance to construct a new laboratory designed to test the quality of drugs, Heath Minister, Rajitha Senaratne said.

The establishment of this laboratory would be vital for the Health Ministry.

The National Drug Policy which was passed as an urgent bill in Parliament under the Government's 100- Day Program has clearly mentioned that drugs should be prescribed according to the generic name, with the brand name indicated within brackets.

Once we get this laboratory and the quality testing starts, we will be able to do this. Dr.Senaratne said, the Health Ministry is to receive another MRI scanner from China, for the Colombo North Hospital.
