W.S.R. Fernando & Co. diversifies business

W.S.R. Fernando & Company (Pvt) Ltd, a heavy vehicle and machinery contractor, was set up as SDC Trade Combine (Pvt) Ltd in 1995 and in 1999 was relaunched as W.S.R. Fernando & Company (Pvt) Ltd.

Managing Director, W. S. R. Fernando and Company, Sunil Fernando, with an award the company won recently. His wife Jessica, a director of the company, looks on.

The company specialises in transporting heavy cargo in the power, energy and construction sectors.

The company recently imported a multi axle trailer which can carry loads up to 150 tonnes from the United Kingdom.

Today, the company is focusing on diversifying its business by setting up WSR Clearing and Forwarding (Pvt) Ltd, to provide value added services to clients in the import and export trade. The new venture will be launched on Tuesday at Charles Place, Rawathawatte, Moratuwa.

WSR Fernando & Company is a privately owned company founded by Managing Director Sunil Fernando. Starting with four employees and without a vehicle of its own, the company expanded within 15 years and today owns over 100 vehicles and machinery and about 150 employees.

The Group Head Office is in Moratuwa and transport operations are handled by the depot office in Biyagama.

In 2005, as a result of the visionary planning of the board of directors, Lawrences Logistics (Pvt) Ltd was set up, as a fully owned subsidiary, to cater to the construction industry and be a part of the development projects in the country.

The company also expanded operations by opening a branch office in Medawachchiya which enables easy access to the on-going project sites in the North. It has a team of qualified and experienced managers, supervisors, operators and helpers.

"Before undertaking the transportation of heavy cargo route surveys are carried out to determine the safest routes and where necessary liaising with authorities in obtaining approvals to transport such equipment will be carried out on behalf of customers," a company spokesman said.
