Hendala stinks again

All successive governments had failed miserably to come up with a viable solution for garbage dumping. The hype about recycling and producing bio-fuel has been mere rhetoric. Hendala is a virtual garbage heap, an eye-sore for residents and passers-by. Large quantities of refuse accumulate every day and get piled up at every nook and corner. Those with backyards turn them into compost but others have to depend on garbage collectors. Local authorities turn a blind eye and get away with lame excuses that they do not have a permanent dump.

The collectors of the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha have been dumping refuse at a location in Dikkowita. When contacted an official said that this locality is not available any longer.

Uncollected garbage for weeks is seen strewn all over by stray dogs.

Litter bags collect rain water providing a fine breeding ground for dengue larvae. Clogged drains inundate the area for the slightest rain and the stench is unbearable.

Residents are left in a quandary as to whom to turn to.
