New AA President Sugath Thilakaratne:

Promises to deliver the goods

The newly elected Athletic Association president Sugath Tillekeratne expressed his utmost confidence that he could deliver the goods. with the support of the others, namely the Ministry Of Sports and the National Olympic Committee’ Tillekeratne sees bright future for athletics in Sri Lanka.

Sugath Thilakaratne

Tillekeratne said that initially when he came forward as a candidate as the president of the country’s prestigious athletic body, many eyebrows were raised doubting his capabilities as an administrator. “ Remember I was the president of the Nuwara-Eliya District Athletic Association for two years . Many doubted my capabilities as an administrator, At the beginning no one would have the experience, and it will not be a bed of roses, but once you are at it you are bound to gather experience and forge ahead.” said Tillekeratne.

When I decided to contest the post Tillekeratne said he was encouraged by former presidents of the athletic bodies and various other administrators like General Palitha Fernando, Sunil Gunawardene, Sunil Jayaweera and Derwin Perera who were all administrators and coaches during his running days.

The 42-year-old Vidulipura MV athlete, Sugath Tillkeratne is the only sprinter who has run the 400m race under 45 seconds twice in his career and a household name during his hay days.

He showed a lot of promise while at school and produced a record breaking 400m run at a meet at the Anuradhapura Esplanade which he remembers very well.

“Some may say that right it how is dismal period for athletics in the country, but I do not think so. It is our responsibility to dispel the gloom and look at a brighter side of things for the sport in the country. I am from the Nuwara-Eliya district and the present sports minister also represents the same district.

So there is no reason as to why I cannot get his support and blessings.” said the newly elected AAA president.

If we are to do well in athletics, modern technology should be introduced by conducting work shops. Young talent should be harnessed at school and youth level and all help must be given to them. I myself is an athlete I know the grievances of other athletes, We should try our best to address the situation and give them an helping hand for a better future.

Tillekeratne said that he would like to invite his contemporaries and share their knowledge and experience with the youngsters. There shouldn’t be any disparities and our prime goal should focus on the upliftment of Athletics.
