A kaleidoscope of shades

The opening ceremony of the biennial 12th Art Exhibition, `Shades' of the Junior section of the British School in Colombo was held recently. Every child in the Junior School from the age of two and a half to 11, participated.

Each child had a canvas painting and a 3-D model or craft item on display. There was an unlimited variety in terms of the materials used to express their creativity and the 3-D models had been created with recyclable material.

They were guided by Mrs. Indika Wijebahu Wickramaratne and Ms. Noeline Karunaweera, assisted by Mrs. Sasha Kulasuriya.

The opening ceremony performance interlinked with the themes of the exhibition. The Chief Guest Michael Anthoniesz, himself a talented artist, was mesmerised by the creative talents displayed at the exhibition. Children performed with traditional Sri Lankan items such as the raban, kulu and sesath.

Students showcased their talents by presenting a fashion show with their self-designed 'under-the-sea' or 'sea-creature' outfits. A ballet performance captured the waves, moods and colours of the sea.

The exhibition is open till Sunday July 5 for schools on weekdays from 9 to 5 pm and to the public on weekends from 9 to 5 pm at 63, Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo 8.
