UNP set for polls campaign

The United National Party (UNP) has appointed a high-profile committee to conduct its campaign for the forthcoming general election. Party Chairman Malik Samarawickrama will function as manager of the committee.

The committee comprises Party Chairman, Malik Samarawickrama, General Secretary Kabir Hashim, Minister Karu Jayasuriya, Nissanka Nanayakkara and Daya Pelpola.

The committee will coordinate with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in steering the election campaign, highly-placed party sources said yesterday.

Minister Jayasuriya would not contest the elections, since he would perhaps be appointed as a national list MP. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had told the MPs and electorate organisers that the party’s campaign should be launched at the grass-roots level.
