Heavy showers forecast

Heavy showers are forecast for Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts today, with more than 150 millimetres of rain expected in these areas. Cloudy conditions and intermittent rains are also expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Duty Meteorologist Nadee Rupasinghe told the Sunday Observer, thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Eastern and Uva provinces during the afternoon or evening and that there will be strong southwesterly winds, especially over the Western slope of the Central hills and surrounding the sea. Wind velocity is expected to be nearly 80km per hour, she said. There will be showers at times in the seas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, she said, adding that showers or thundershowers can also be expected at a few places during the afternoon or evening. Winds will blow South-westerly and the velocity will be 30-40 kmph, she said.
