This New Year: we will...
by Husna Inayathullah
New Year resolutions are a time-tested tradition that probably has
its origins in religious rituals. At the start of each year, ancient
Babylonians promised their Gods they would return borrowed objects and
repay their debts. The Romans began the year by making promises to God
Janus, for whom January has been named. In the Medieval era, the Knights
took the 'Peacock vow' at the end of Christmas each year to re-affirm
their commitment to chivalry. Things have of course changed, with the
focus now shifting to personal milestones such as losing weight, giving
up vices, adopting new virtues and generally being a loving, giving,
caring individual.
So what are Sri Lankans resolving to do in 2016? We asked a few and
they said:
Focus on
my niche strengths
Nalaka Gunawardene- Science writer,
columnist and new media researcher
Every
New Year is an opportunity to look back at what we have been
doing, make fresh choices, and reaffirm our commitments.
Next year, 2016, holds a personal significance for me as I
turn 50. For over a quarter century, I have made a career of
asking questions and going in search of reliable answers. I
see myself continuing being such a life-long student (with
frequent journalistic output), but I also want to reflect
more with the perspectives that come with age and
experience. My specific resolution for the New Year is to
focus on my niche strengths - that is, to engage in writing
and public speaking on the confluence of science,
information technology, society and culture. Standing at
that exciting intersection, I want to share observations and
insights to demystify social media, and harness their
potential for the greater good. Watch this space!

Make Sri
Lanka Smile
Danu Innasithamby - Chairman at The
Danu Innasithamby Foundation and media personality
Everyone
tries to lose weight but I have given up on that. I want to
embrace my curves. I wish for peace and equality for
everyone in the country. Actually one of my greatest New
Year resolutions is to bring my project 'Sri Lanka's Smile'
which was launched two months ago into a global project
namely 'Globally we smile'. I am going to create a global
network and collect some fund and get helping hands from
across the country to help the less fortunate. Every day we
see and hear stories of people in Sri Lanka going through a
lot of hardship and struggle due to various circumstances,
and sometimes, it just doesn't seem that anyone has a reason
to smile. That is where we come in. Our mission is simple.

Make the
year memorable
Manishi
Suriyaarachchi - Member of the Sri Lanka Model United
Nations (SLMUN)
I guess I will start by adjusting the
small things I messed up and go into some cleaning, as many
have been complaining. I will commit more to my poetry and
also get a grip in photography. A little work out will not
kill, so yes maybe it is about time I fixed my mind to
engaging in some exercising regularly. Travelling! One of
the major goals would be to travel around exploring each and
every hidden beauty and also to spend some classy time in
the beach. Most importantly I would make the New Year a
memorable one with the best people, as memories last
forever. |
Find my
soul mate
Fazal
Fariz - CIMA student
I could not uphold most of my 2015
resolutions but it is worth a second shot. So 2016 is going
to be a big year for me, in one word it's going to be
'Organized'. I need enormous changes in many aspects in my
life. To start with, my fitness goals, I'm going to hit the
gym and never give up whatsoever, I'm going to attain a good
food habit and a sleep pattern as well. I will quit
procrastinating and start working hard towards my goals of
improving my financial situation. It is a vow more than a
resolution. I am going to read 'The Power of full
Engagement' by Jim Loehr, 'The Magic of Thinking Big' by
David Schwartz and other entrepreneur inspirational books
which will keep me up with my goals. Like most of us, I'm
looking forward to finding 'love', and it's definitely a
goal and is definitely a New Year's resolution to find my
'soul mate'. |
Be a
better teacher
Surangi
Opatha - English teacher
For the past four years I have been living
in France with my husband. My New Year resolution as a newly
appointed English teacher working in Paris is to impart much
wisdom to children, make them develop a positive attitude
towards English as most French children are not aware of the
value of learning English. I also want to improve my skills
as a teacher and will try my best to be the fun loving
teacher every kid desires. As a wife I will be more
supportive to my husband, family and friends. |
