PLC builds classrooms for Chilaw school

People’s Leasing staff, former principals and Deputy Director of Education and students in one of new classrooms built for A/L students of Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya in Chilaw.

People's Leasing PLC (PLC), Chilaw constructed two classrooms for Advanced Level students of Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw. The school, eight km away from the Chilaw town has 352 students and 23 teachers.

Earlier, Advanced Level classes were conducted in a cadjan thatched wattle and daub enclosure made by the students themselves. Witnessing the hardships faced by the students, the former Head of the Chilaw branch, Nalin de Silva spearheaded the initiative.

Led by Keshika Karunarathne, the present Head of the Chilaw branch, and his team, the warichchi classroom was transformed into a permanent classroom building with new chairs and tables, thanks to 133 volunteer hours dedicated by 19 staff members of PLC Chilaw.

The two classrooms for the students were handed over recently by DGM, Operations, Lionel Fernando and the management and staff of PLC. Deputy Director Education of Zonal Education Office, Chilaw, former and present principals of the school were also present.

"Earlier, we didn't have a proper building to conduct Advanced Level classes and 80 Advanced Level students studied in the warichchi classroom. Despite this, we achieved 100% and 80% results in 2012 and 2013. We appreciate the generosity of PLC in providing the two new classrooms with furniture.

I thank especially the Head of PLC Chilaw and all the staff on behalf of my school," said the Principal of the school, C.B.A.M.S. Wijeratne.
