More police on duty

The police will deploy 5000 officers in Colombo for special duty today to provide security to May Day rallies and control traffic in the city. Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said while 3100 Police personnel will be deployed to provide security, another 1900 officers will be assigned to control traffic due to the many May Day celebrations and rallies in Colombo and the suburbs.

Gunasekara also said the police will ensure that the interim order issued by the Colombo Additional Magistrate on Friday preventing the Joint Opposition from holding its May Day rally at Shalika grounds in Narahenpita is upheld. “Security will be provided in that area as well” he said.

Sections of Maligawatta, Baseline Road, Highlevel Road, Saranankara Road and Park Road will be closed during various times of the day, while entry to Maradana Road, Sangaraja Mawatha, Panchikawatta Road, Armour Street, Saunders Road, Robert Gunawardene Mawatha, Mihindu Mawatha, Kirula Road, Thimbirigasyaya Road and several others roads in the area will be also be limited.

Public transport buses will be in operation but will have to use alternative routes as directed by Police.
