Social media blood donation campaign
Two years ago a group of 10 young adults from the Sri Lanka Twitter
community created #iDonateLK - the first-ever blood donation drive
organised in Colombo through social media. The response was good, many
donated blood and supported the event. They collected blood from 43
donors spanning all the blood groups, including rare ones such as AB
negative, O negative and B negative.
This year they reorganised themselves for the second segment of #iDonateLK.
The organising committee included Gayathri Seneviratne (Jetwing Group),
Prasad Perera (Diplomatic Mission), Vishmi Ranatunga (Ladies' College),
Shafraz Kahir (Datamation Systems), Yeheshan de Silva (Xtrans (Pvt) Ltd)
Surovi Salgado (Cake Labs), Gihan Fernando (Gihan Bookshop) and Umesh
Leelasena (GT Nexus).
Everyone who donated blood is registered with the National Blood Bank
and can donate blood whenever possible.
They can donate four months from May 7, 2016 which is the recommended
wait -period for a donor to donate blood once he has already donated.
