Wesley regains
LE Blaze trophy
with runaway 57-7 win
Wesley College dished out a superb brand of running rugby to beat Kingswood
College Kandy 57 points (9 tries, 6 conversions) To 7 ( 1 try, 1 conversion) in
their 29th L. E. Blaze Trophy inter- school ‘A’ Division league rugby tournament
match and thus regain the trophy after a lapse of several years. The match was
played at Royal Sports Complex, Reid Avenue yesterday. The winners led 26-0 at
half time.The match got off to a rousing start with both teams battling it out
for supremacy.
Wesley drew first blood in the 16th minute of play when their captain cum centre
Omar Kuthubdeen broke through the blind side to touch down near the left corner
flag after covering nearly 60 metres. Scrum half Avishka Lee made the conversion
and Wesley went into a 7-nil lead.
In the 23rd minute off a turn over ball centre A.N.Jayaweera who formed the
overlap burst through down the right corner flank brushing aside several
Kingswood defenders to score a fabulous try under the post. Avishka made the
conversion and Wesley went in to a 14-0 lead.
Soon after in the 27th minute Wesley three quarters collected a ball and set
their three quarter line in motion. The ball changed several hands on to
Kuthubdeen who dummied his way through to score far right. Avishka missed the
conversion and the score read Wesley 19-0.
Wesley went further ahead in the 32nd minute when Sashika Hashan went through
the blind side and sliced through the Kingswood defence to score a spectacular
try.
Avishka made the conversion to take the score line to 26-0 at half time. Soon
after resumption Wesley scored two back to back tries through Avantha Hashan and
fly half Mursheed Doray. Avishka failed with both conversions but the score line
extended to 36-0.
Wesley scored again through their last year captain cum centre Kuthubdeen who
crashed through for a try. Scrum half Avishka Lee put over the conversion. The
score read 43-0.
Soon after, off a fine three quarter move replacement fly half Walpitigama
crashed through for a try which Avishka made the conversion and Wesley topped
the half century mark. Wesley virtually sealed the match when their replacement
player M.Bahardeen collected a ball and darted his way over for a superb try.
Avishka’s conversion made it 57-0.
In the closing stages of the game Kingswood scored a consolation try through
Ekanayaka and fly half Shivantha Ranaweera made the conversion.
