Short Story
Saleem's regret
Saleem, a 25-year-old man was badly in need of a job. Since he comes from a
poor family, he was not very educated, and was in need of money to feed his
family.
Living with his 49-year-old mother and 18-year-old sister, this responsibility
fell on his shoulders. However, Saleem had very bad manners. He had no patience.
He would yell at people, using bad words. He would not offer his 'salah' and was
often rude to everyone.
When Saleem found a job, he was overwhelmed with joy. He told everyone how he
had applied for it and his high expectations. But, his pride was loathed by
everyone. No one wished him good luck but never said a word because everyone
adored his mother, who was a very gracious lady. His sister, Sarah was a good
and well-brought up girl. Only Saleem was bad-tempered as he never paid heed to
his mother's advice.
A few weeks later, Saleem had an unexpected visitor who told him that he
expected him to join his company and to report for work in three days.
Unfortunately, Saleem was fast asleep when the visitor arrived. He was furious
for being disturbed and came out yelling, “Why can't a person rest in peace, you
annoying pests.” As he caught sight of the visitor, he said, “What do you want
in broad daylight, you stranger” The visitor was stunned on hearing this. He
immediately changed his mind but replied calmly, “I was sent to inform you about
the job you had applied for.”
Saleem now felt hopeful and excited on hearing this. He looked eagerly at the
visitor.
“But, I now realise that you are not suitable for the particular job,” said the
visitor. Saleem got the shock of his life and fell on his knees. He said
pleadingly, “Please give me the job. You know I need it very much." “I will
inform the company right away to look for another person,” the visitor said and
left Saleem in complete disappointment.
