Land ownership to over 190 families in Sidhambarapuram village
The government presented land ownership certificates to over 190
families living in the Sidhambarapuram village in Vavuniya, a spokesman
for the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Prison Reforms said
yesterday.
The Sidhambarapuram village was a camp which housed families for the
last 25 years. Villagers were temporarily settled in this area in 1990
after they were displaced due to the conflict in the North.
In an effort to bring normalcy to their lives, and giving them the
opportunity to set up permanent housing, Rehabilitation, Resettlement
and Prison Reforms Minister D.M. Swaminathan presented land ownership
certificates.
"We are committed to ensure the well-being of the Tamil Community and
all projects implemented in the North are to benefit the people living
in these areas. The Tamil community should understand that the present
government would not do anything that would adversely affect them" said
Minister Swaminathan.
Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V Wigneswaran also
participated in the event. |
