Remembering a hero

Dayko the four-year-old white Labrador, is hailed as a hero for rescuing seven people from the aftermath of the Ecuador earthquake last April.

Dayko lived in Ecuador and worked for 'Ibara Fire Service.' He did not receive any remuneration for his services, except for food and medicine.

The massive earthquake with 7.8 on the Richter Scale, ripped apart buildings, roads and other structures, leaving 650 dead and injuring over 2000. Dayko was engaged in the rescue operations in the aftermath of the earthquake. Within a short period, he rescued seven people who were trapped in the rubble.

Unfortunately, Dayko suffered a massive heart attack due to exhaustion and breathed his last, during rescue operations. The medical team tried everything they could to revive him but their efforts sadly failed. Dayko gave his life so that his two-legged friends may live. He worked as a rescue dog for three and a half years. Although Dayko is no more, he will live forever in the hearts and minds of the people of Ecuador and the rest of the world. He is a true hero. Dayko's life is a classic example to all of us.

It is time we stopped strutting like peacocks, with our bloated egos and start thinking of the less fortunate. We must start thinking of those who do not have even one square meal a day.
