Cathay Pacific daily flights to Colombo

Cathay Pacific Airways will commence a daily service between Hong Kong and Colombo from March 1.

A new thrice-weekly service will be introduced between Hong Kong and Colombo via Singapore. It will complement the airline's current operation of four flights a week between Hong Kong and Colombo via Bangkok, forming a convenient daily frequency between Colombo and Hong Kong. The new service which will be operated by an Airbus A330-300 with a capacity to carry 311 passengers and additional cargo capacity will offer the airline's passenger and cargo customers much greater flexibility.

"With a daily service between Colombo and Hong Kong, we can provide more connections for both our passengers and cargo customers and continue to strengthen Hong Kong as a global hub," said Ronald Lam, Cathay Pacific Country Manager, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

The increase in capacity will also give a boost to the cargo capacity and schedule to and from Colombo.

Cathay will be able to serve the cargo customers' needs even better by offering direct services to Bangkok and Singapore as well as daily services to Hong Kong, from where connections can be made for time-sensitive shipments to Japan, the USA and other key export destinations.

Having recently celebrated 10 years of operations between Hong Kong and Colombo, the expansion plans by Cathay Pacific Airways are welcomed by Sri Lanka's travel industry in the current context of burgeoning growth in the tourism sector.

Having been granted Approved Destination Status by the Government of China, large numbers of both leisure and business travellers are expected to grow rapidly between the two destinations.

Cathay Pacific with its home base in Hong Kong and its newly launched operations between Hong Kong and Beijing is well positioned to facilitate such growth opportunities.

Japan too has shown a marked increase in arrivals with special Cathay Pacific charters bringing in several hundred Japanese at one time while more charters are scheduled. Convenient connections from the airline's super hub in Hong Kong to more than 80 cities including Korea, the USA, Canada, Europe and Australasia will also be made open to travellers on a daily basis.

Cathay Pacific Airways was voted the Airline of the Year for 2003 by Skytrax.
