'Batik' wins World Star Sri Lanka recently won a prestigious international accolade, the World Star, awarded by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), for the 'Batik' export quality tea gift pack, conceptualised and marketed by Standard Trading Company. The winners were announced in Cairo, Egypt at the end of 2003 while the World Stars will be awarded at a gala WPO event to be held in Switzerland later this year. Standard Trading was the only Lankan company to win an award at this event. 'Batik' won the award for its slip-on wooden box concept, which consists of six compartments containing six different speciality teas packed in foil pouches to retain their freshness. The box depicted the traditional Kandy Esala pageant setting. This was one of 52 awards gifted at the 2003 World Stars for 360 entries fielded. Sri Lanka was also one of the four countries to receive World Star honour this year from the Asia Pacific region, with the other winners being Japan, India and China. The award winners were selected by 21 international judges. The Standard Trading entry had to first follow stringent eligibility requirements for the Lanka Star and the Asia Star so as to participate at the World Star stage. Lanka Star-nominated products must be made in Sri Lanka while Asia Stars must have won a packaging related award in their respective countries, which have to be Asia Packaging Federation (APF) member countries for these nominees to be eligible to apply for consideration and must not have been entered for any previous Asia Star competition. Sri Lanka started its foray into global packaging standards with the first ever packaging contest for excellence in packaging known as Lanka Star Awards which was held in 1987 in conjunction with the APF Congress and Expopak '87. Since 1987, the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging has been holding Lanka Star contests biennially with the assistance of the National Packaging Centre (a joint venture created with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board) and each year, eight to 15 entries win Lanka Star Awards. A fair number of Lanka Star winners have won Asia Star Awards. The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging was inaugurated in 1975, and is an arm of the APF, established in Tokyo in 1967. |
