Intensifying co-operation with Sri Lanka - Israeli official by Ananth Palakidnar Mr. Mordehai Amihai, Director of South and South East Asia Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Israel has pledged for greater co-operation with Sri Lanka in the areas of agriculture, water management, tourism and education. Mr. Mordehai Amihai, along with the newly appointed Israel envoy to Sri Lanka David Danieli, was in Colombo last week to discuss matters pertaining to commerce, agriculture, education and tourism with Sri Lanka. Israel Consul in Colombo, Wicky Wickramatunga, told the 'Sunday Observer', that it was after fourteen months that Israel has appointed David Danieli as its envoy to Sri Lanka and he would be based in New Delhi. "Messrs Mordehai Amihai and David Danieli have met President Chandrika Bandaranike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Foreign, Commerce and Industrial Ministers in Colombo", Wickramatunga said. He said that the meetings were cordial and a wide range of issues between the two countries were discussed. Commenting on the area of tourism, Wickramatunga said that last year, more than three-thousand Israeli tourists visited Sri Lanka and this year its number was likely to increase. Describing on the areas of education, he pointed out that last year alone Israel had trained 260 Sri Lankans on short-term courses in the fields of agriculture, water management and child care. The Israeli VIPs visited the Dalada Maligawa and the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy and also the Elephant orphanage in Pinnawela. |
